What is LED Screen Aging Test?

LED screen aging test is a crucial process in the manufacturing and quality control of LED displays. It involves subjecting the screen to prolonged periods of operation under controlled conditions to assess its durability, stability, and potential for failure.

LED Screen Aging Test

During the aging test, the LED screen is operated for several hours or days, typically in a laboratory setting that controls for factors like temperature and humidity. Throughout this time, various parameters such as brightness levels, color accuracy, and operational stability are continuously monitored.

By evaluating these parameters, manufacturers can identify any deterioration in performance that might not be obvious in initial quality control inspections.

Generally,  this aging test will simulate the real-world usage of the screen, helping manufacturers identify potential issues before the product reaches consumers.

Why do we need to perform LED screen aging tests?

Conducting LED screen aging tests is crucial for ensuring product reliability, performance, and lifespan.

Here’s why aging test is so crucial:

Addressing Brightness Decay

Over time, the materials in LED components tend to degrade, leading to reduced brightness. This degradation can negatively impact display clarity and visibility. By simulating extended use, aging tests help predict the screen’s longevity, enabling manufacturers to set realistic expectations for brightness over time.

Detecting Color Shifts

LED screens rely on a blend of red, green, and blue diodes to produce a full spectrum of colors. With prolonged operation, the light-emitting efficiency of these diodes may change unevenly, causing color inaccuracies or shifts. Aging tests uncover these potential issues, allowing manufacturers to make necessary adjustments to enhance color stability.

Identifying Pixel Faults

Pixel faults can occur as a result of uneven degradation among the individual LEDs or capacitor failures, circuit board failures, resulting in dead pixels or areas that do not display correctly. Aging testing allows inspectors to manually detect these problems with the naked eye and replace or repair these bad LED lamp beads early.

Discovering Flatness Problems

During the assembly of LED screens, manual work is not always flawless, which can result in some screens having a flatness level that exceeds acceptable visual standards, leading to an uneven surface. Aging tests can help detect these issues early on, allowing for timely corrective actions to ensure the display maintains a high level of flatness.

Ensuring Uniformity

Different parts of the screen may experience varying levels of brightness degradation, leading to uneven illumination. Uniformity is essential for high-quality displays, particularly in applications where consistent brightness and color are critical. With Aging tests,  we can quickly find any discrepancies in uniformity that may arise during the aging process

LED Screen Uneven Brightness

The standard of LED screen aging test

While there is no universal standard for LED screen aging tests, several industry standards and guidelines can be followed to ensure comprehensive and reliable testing. These standards typically cover aspects such as:

  • Test Conditions: Defining the specific environmental conditions, including temperature, humidity, and light exposure, to be used during the aging test. For example, temperature: 50°C ± 5°C, and humidity level 20%-70% non-condensing
  • Test Duration: Specifying the duration of the aging test, which can vary depending on the expected lifespan of the screen and the severity of the aging conditions. For example, a typical test may last between 72 to 168 hours.
  • Test Parameters: Identifying the key performance indicators to be monitored during the aging test, such as brightness, color accuracy, and power consumption.
  • Test modes: static full color (white screen), single-color displays (Red, blue, Green), and dynamic video content testing and static image test.

The Steps for LED Display Aging Test

A led screen waiting aging test
  1. Prepare the LED Screen: Clean the screen and ensure that all electrical connections are properly secured. Check that the screen is functioning correctly before initiating the aging test.

  2. Set the Test Environment: Place the LED screen in a controlled environmental chamber or test setup that can maintain the desired temperature, humidity, and lighting conditions.

  3. Perform Initial Measurements: Before starting the aging test, measure and record the initial performance of the LED screen, including parameters such as brightness, color temperature, color accuracy, and pixel uniformity.

  4. Conduct the Aging Test: Power on the LED screen and let it operate continuously under the specified test conditions. Depending on the standard, the aging test may involve a combination of the following:

    • Constant operation at a specific brightness level
    • Cyclic operation with alternating on/off periods
    • Exposure to elevated temperatures or humidity levels
  5. Conduct Periodic Evaluations: At regular intervals (e.g., every 24 hours), pause the aging test and measure the performance of the LED screen. This includes assessing the same parameters evaluated in the initial measurements.

  6. Monitor for Degradation: Analyze the performance data collected during the periodic evaluations to identify any trends or changes in the LED screen’s performance. Look for indicators of brightness degradation, color shifts, pixel failures, and other aging-related issues.

  7. Determine Failure Criteria: Establish predetermined thresholds or failure criteria that, if exceeded, would indicate the LED screen has reached the end of its acceptable lifespan or performance level.

  8. Document the Results: Carefully record all the test data, observations, and any actions taken during the aging test. This documentation can be used for future reference, product improvements, and regulatory compliance purposes.

The time of Aging Test

The duration of the LED screen aging test is a critical factor that directly impacts the reliability and performance evaluation of the screen. Here is a detailed guide to understanding the time requirements for LED screen aging tests:

  • 24 Hours: A 24-hour aging test is typically used for initial quality checks and to identify any immediate defects or issues. This duration is suitable for basic performance evaluation and is often used for smaller or less critical LED screens.
  • 48 Hours: A 48-hour aging test provides a more comprehensive evaluation of the screen’s performance and reliability. This duration helps in identifying issues related to prolonged usage, such as brightness decay and color shifts.
  • 72 Hours: A 72-hour aging test is the standard duration for most LED screens, especially those intended for commercial or public display applications. This extended duration ensures a thorough evaluation of the screen’s performance, reliability, and durability under continuous operation.
  • Beyond 72 Hours: For LED screens intended for critical applications, such as large-scale advertising displays or high-end sports screen, the aging test duration may be extended beyond 72 hours. Extended testing provides additional assurance of the screen’s reliability and performance under prolonged usage conditions.

The LED module aging test serves as a foundational step that precedes the LED screen aging test, ensuring that the essential components are functioning properly before moving on.

This preliminary testing can identify potential issues early on, including brightness inconsistencies, broken LED lamp beads, and abnormal color temperatures.

Typically, the aging test for LED modules lasts for one week and includes various assessments such as the white screen test, single-color tests (red, green, and blue), and grayscale tests. Importantly, this phase does not include video or image tests, as it aims to evaluate the core performance of the LED modules.
