Have you ever found yourself asking the question—what is the LED screen size?
Choosing the right LED screen size is crucial for ensuring the success of events, performances, business presentations, or advertising billboards. The size of your LED screen determines how effectively your content will be displayed and how well your audience can engage with it.
From exhibitions and conferences to outdoor concerts and retail displays, the screen size plays a major role in creating impactful visuals that leave a lasting impression.
In this article, I want to help you answer the question. Let’s get started!

What is LED Screen Size?
LED screen size refers to the physical dimensions of the display, typically measured by its width and height for rectangular shapes, or by area for non-rectangular shapes like curved, round, or spherical screens.
For rectangular screens, the size is determined by multiplying the width and height. Generally, these measurements are often given in meters (m), millimeters (mm), feet, or inches depending on your preference.
However, non-rectangular LED screens like round LED displays, ball-shaped LED screens, or curved LED panels are defined by their total surface area, as their dimensions differ from standard rectangular formats.
Why is the Size Important for an LED Screen?
The size of an LED screen is critical because it directly impacts the effectiveness of the display for its intended purpose.
When we want to install an LED screen, we need to confirm what size is suitable for the installation.
Generally, there are two options to consider.
Large size LED screen
Generally, Large size LED screen means the width or height is more than 10m.
For large-scale events or outdoor advertising, such as crossroad billboards or concerts targeting a massive audience, a large-sized LED screen ensures that the content is visible and impactful from a distance.
Small size LED screen
Small size LED screen means the width or height is less than 10m.
Conversely, for smaller events like conferences, weddings, or indoor advertisements, a smaller LED screen would be more suitable, providing sufficient clarity without overwhelming the space.
This type of LED screen doesn’t require a large space to install. For installations where the audience is smaller and more intimate, a size LED screen is generally our recommendation.
Once the screen size is determined, other aspects like pixel pitch and resolution can be carefully considered to ensure the screen fits both the viewing distance and performance needs.
How to Calculate the LED Screen Size
Determining the size of an LED screen isn’t complicated; however, it requires a basic understanding of its components, such as LED modules and cabinets.
As we all know, an LED screen is essentially constructed from smaller units called LED modules, which are joined together to form LED screen cabinets, and these cabinets are then assembled to create the complete screen.
In some situations, LED screens can be directly constructed using individual LED modules, eliminating the need for cabinets.
This modular structure allows the size of the LED screen to be calculated in two key ways:
- Using cabinets—The total screen size is determined by the dimensions and arrangement of the cabinets (e.g., 960 mm × 960 mm cabinets assembled into a grid, 640 mm × 640 mm cabinet assembled into a matrix such as 2,560×1,920mm LED screen).
- Using modules—By adding up the length and width of individual modules, the screen size is built module by module. For example, 10pcs 320×160mm in horizontally and 5 pcs in vertically, the LED screen size will be 3200×800mm.
The above calculation method is based on the premise that you need to know the quantities of modules or cabinets.
If you only know pixel pitch and resolution, the calculation method is as follows:
- Screen Width = Resolution in Horizontal * pixel pitch.
- Screen Height = Resolution in Horizontal * pixel pitch.
For example, the LED screen resolution with 960 dots horizontally and 256 dots vertically. The screen is a P5 LED video wall. so what is the size of this screen?
The result is:
- Screen Width = 960 * 5 = 4,800mm.
- Screen Height = 256* 5 = 1,280mm.
In other words, the screen is 4.8m in width and 1.28m in height.
Standard LED Screen Sizes
Standard LED screen sizes can be broken down into two main aspects: the LED module size and the LED cabinet size. These components are the building blocks of the final assembled LED screen.

LED Screen Sizes in Pixel Pitch
LED screens are measured not only by physical dimensions but also by their pixel dimensions (width x height). Sometimes we call it resolutions.
Generally, pixel pitch and physical dimensions determine the LED screen size in pixels. It uses the number of pixels in width and height to stand for.
Here is a simple calculation formula you can follow:
- Pixel Width = Screen Width ÷ Pixel Pitch
- Pixel Height = Screen Height ÷ Pixel Pitch
For instance, a screen with a pixel pitch of 2 mm and 3840 x 1600 mm size, has:
- Pixel Width = 3840 ÷ 2 = 1920 pixels
- Pixel Height = 1600 ÷ 2 = 800 pixels
So, this P2 LED screen size in pixel pitch is 1920*800 pixels. You can use the same principle for other LED video walls.
In addition, there are Common resolutions (LED screen size in pixel pitch) like 720p, 1080p (Full HD), 2K (often referring to a 2048 x 1080 resolution), 4K (Ultra HD, typically 3840 x 2160), and even 8K (7680 x 4320).
Here are the corresponding pixels as follows:
| LED screen Size in Pixels (H x L) | LED Screen Resolution |
| 1280 x 720 pixels | 720P |
| 1920 x 1080 pixels | 1080P |
| 2560 x 1440 pixels | 2K |
| 4096 x 2160 pixels | 4K |
| 7680 x 4320 pixels | 8K |
As the table shows, the LED screen size in pixel pitch is intrinsically linked to the desired resolution.

Factors That Can Affect Your LED Screen Size Choice
Now you have learned the LED screen size and also its calculation ways. In this chapter, we will discuss the factors that will lead to an optimal LED screen size choice.
Choosing the right LED screen size involves careful consideration of several interconnected factors. Here are 4 main aspects that need to be considered: pixel pitch, viewing distance, installation locations, and budge.
Pixel Pitch
Firstly, Pixel pitch plays a crucial role
A smaller pixel pitch results in a sharper, more detailed image, especially crucial for close-up viewing or applications requiring high precision.
For the small-sized LED screen, the small pixel pitch is suitable and it can support more LEDs compared with the large pixel pitch.
If the LED screen has a large size, we can use a large pixel pitch to meet the resolution requirements of the LED.
Here are the common pixel pitches for large or small size LED screen:
| Type | Pixel Pitch |
| Large Size LED screen | P16, P12, P10, P8, P6.67, P6, etc |
| Medium Size LED screen | P10, P8, P6.67, P6, P5, P4.81, P3.91, P3, P2.9 etc |
| Small-size LED screen | P2.5, P2, P1.876, P1.53, P1.25, etc |

Viewing Distance
The viewing distance is defined as the range within which an audience can see the images on the LED display without blur.
As we know, This distance is directly influenced by pixel pitch.
As above mentioned, the LED screen size can affect pixel pitch. Therefore, if the pixel pitch is affected by the screen size, the viewing distance will vary accordingly too.
To make you understand easily, here is a list of common pixel pitches and their suitable viewing distances.
| Pixel Pitch | Minimum Viewing Distance | Optimal Viewing Distance | Maximum viewing distance |
| P1.25 mm | 1.25 m (4.1ft) | 2.5 to 3.75 m (8.2ft to 12.3ft) | 38m (127.4 ft) |

Installation Location : Indoor or Outdoor
In the meantime, we also need to consider the installation location which significantly influences the choice of LED screen size.
There will be two options as below:
Outdoor installations
Outdoor installations, such as outdoor LED billboards or large-scale events, typically demand larger screens to ensure visibility from a distance.
In the meantime, factors like ambient light, weather conditions, and the viewing distance of the audience necessitate larger pixel pitches and consequently larger physical screen sizes.
Furthermore, outdoor screens must be robust enough to withstand the elements, which often adds to their overall size.
Indoor installations
In contrast, indoor installations, such as in conference rooms, retail spaces, or smaller events, generally utilize smaller LED screens.
Because, indoor LED screens usually require closer viewing distances, which means that smaller screens with small pixel pitches can be effectively utilized.
Since the audience is typically closer to the display, indoor screens are mostly designed to fit within tighter spatial constraints.
Moeny, Money, Money
Finally, budget is a 3rd factor that should not be overlooked.
The total production cost of an LED screen is exponentially related to its size: larger screens require more materials, which results in higher costs. This generally includes the need for more LEDs, additional wiring, and more cabinets to house the components.
Consequently, as the size of the screen increases, so does the overall expense.
Moreover, larger LED screens often entail higher maintenance costs. A bigger installation may require more frequent servicing, additional parts, and labor costs, further straining an already tight budget.
If you have a substantial budget, you can choose a larger screen that can enhance visibility and audience engagement.
However, if financial constraints are present, a smaller screen might be the more practical choice, offering a balance between cost and functionality.
